Blog Bast - English Pizza

English Pizza?! Yup, that's right.  This kind of pizza is simple to make and is also better for your health. English Muffins are lower in fat and so is the cheese used for this recipe. So the next time you're craving pizza try this.

Ingredients:
2 English muffins cut in half
1/2 cup pizza sauce
3/4 cup low fat mozzerella cheese
3/4 cup green peppers, diced (optional)
12 pepperoni slices (optional)

Directions:
Ask an adult to pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees

Place english muffins on a cookie sheet and spoon pizza sauce on each English muffin half. Sprinkle with equal portions of cheese and the toppings of your choice like green peppers or pepperonis. Bake until edges are brown or cheese is bubbly.

This recipe makes 4 pizzas. It's so healthy that you can eat 2 and share the other 2 with a friend or family member! Enjoy!

Enjoy,
Oliver

Blog Blast - Ants on a Log

Sometimes I get bored eating the same old snacks like cookies and cheese doodles. Besides, those things are not good for me. So when I'm hungry for a snack I usually go for Ants on a Log. It's easy to make and I can impress my friends!

Ingredients:
Two celerey stalks, washed and cut into 4 pieces
Jar of creamy peanut butter
Raisins

Directions:
Using a spoon, spread peanut butter onto celery and sprinkle with raisins. Share and enjoy. Makes 2 servings. That's one portion or serving for you and another for a friend :-)

(Tip: Don't like peanut butter? Use cream cheese instead)

Enjoy,
Bianca

Blog Blast - Eat Less of This...

In your school's cafeteria some foods may be labeled with a red sticker. These foods are less healthy to eat. Here are some examples below:

But there are also healthier options with a green sticker that we should eat more of:

Eat less of the foods labeled with a red sticker and more of the foods with a green one! How many green sticker foods have you eaten this week?

Journaling and Goal Setting by Irene

By now Steven has taught you about the best foods to eat and Bianca and CJ showed you some cool exercises. Oliver introduced you to Jordin Sparks who lost some weight to stay healthy.

In order to keep track of all these new and healthy behaviors, your teachers have asked you to keep a journal or a diary. They have also asked you to set goals that will help you to slowly improve your eating and activity habits. Goals are activities that you plan to do sometime in the future.

If you need extra copies of the journal page or goal setting page, just print them by clicking each picture below:

As you fill out thee pages keep these tips in mind:

1.Be sure to ask your parents to help you if you have trouble remembering

2.Keep these pages along with all your other pages

3.Feel free to share your journal and goals with your teacher and classmates

4. And most importantly don't forget to treat yourself when you reach a goal!

Good luck!
Irene

You can do it too by Oliver

Oliver here!

So far you've heard from Steven and Bianca about eating the right foods and how to use exercise to keep us healthy! You have also met CJ the Workout Kid.

Today I want to tell you about my friend Jordin Sparks. You might know her from American Idol. She was just like you and I but by eating healthy and working out she was able to lose a few pounds. I bet she tried some Power Jacks and Shredders!

Check out some before and after pictures :

So if Jordan can be healthy, so can you! That's why it is important to share your journal with your classmates. Share what new foods or recipes you have tried or ways that you have exercised. Be careful to listen to what your classmates have to say...learn from one another!

Signed,
Oliver

Meet my friend CJ by Bianca

Today I want to introduce you to my friend CJ. CJ is just 10 years old and he likes to keep moving. Let's watch him in action! Click on the button in the center of the video.

I can do some of those exercises, like the Power Jack. It is almost like doing a Jumping Jack. And the Shredder? It's like doing a push up. I think I'll stick to the normal push ups for now.

What exercises will you try? What other things can you do to keep moving? Sometimes I like to see how fast I can ride my bike or I will race my brothers in the backyard. Whatever you do, be sure to always write it in your journal!

See you around,
Bianca

Pack your Plate Perfectly by Steven

Do you know what a pyramid is? It's sort of like a triangle.
You've probably seen the Food Pyramid around your school or at your doctor's office. Now, a circle is being used to better show us what we should be eating. Take a closer look...

Can you guess which foods are most important to eat?

That's right..fruits like apples or vegetables such as broccoli or green beans. Protein from chicken is also important to eat. And don't forget grains found in wheat bread or rice.  Dairy products like cheese and milk cream are also part of a balanced diet only in smaller portionsWhenever I look at this picture it reminds me to Pack my Plate Perfectly with each of the food groups! I hope this helps you too.

Which foods are your favorite? What should you eat more of?  I love pineapples and eat them almost every day with my lunch. I know my mom thinks I should eat more protein.

Thanks,
Steven
